The disk area in one picture: slice it up

Slice a disk into thin points, rearrange them into a parallelogram. Its width? π·r. Its height? r. That's where π·r² comes from.

We cut it into 16 thin slices, like a pizza.

We interleave them alternately: it forms an « almost-parallelogram » of width π·r and height r.

Where the formula comes from

The disk’s circumference is 2πr2\pi r. When we interleave the slices point-up then point-down, half the outline ends up on top, half on the bottom: each side of the parallelogram measures πr\pi r.

The height is simply the radius rr.

Area of a parallelogram = base × height, so:

Area=πr×r=πr2\text{Area} = \pi r \times r = \pi r^2

The memory shortcut

Perimeter: « 2πr » — like two turns of the radius. Area: « πr² » — a radius times half a turn of the radius.
