Are two fractions equal? The cross-product decides

$\dfrac{a}{b} = \dfrac{c}{d}$ if and only if $ad = bc$. A foolproof test, no common denominator needed.

The rule

ab=cdβ€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€ŠaΓ—d=bΓ—c\dfrac{a}{b} = \dfrac{c}{d} \iff a \times d = b \times c

Snappy example

Are 69\dfrac{6}{9} and 812\dfrac{8}{12} equal?

Cross product: 6Γ—12=726 \times 12 = 72 and 9Γ—8=729 \times 8 = 72. Equal β†’ yes, the fractions are equal (both are 2/32/3).

Why it works

Multiply both sides of ab=cd\dfrac{a}{b} = \dfrac{c}{d} by bdbd:

a⋅bdb=c⋅bdd⇒ad=bc\dfrac{a \cdot bd}{b} = \dfrac{c \cdot bd}{d} \Rightarrow ad = bc

What it’s for

  • Simplify a fraction: if 69=23\dfrac{6}{9} = \dfrac{2}{3}, you mentally check 6Γ—3=9Γ—26 \times 3 = 9 \times 2 βœ“.
  • Find a missing value: x7=1521\dfrac{x}{7} = \dfrac{15}{21} β†’ 21x=10521x = 105 β†’ x=5x = 5.
  • Proportionality: it’s exactly the β€œdo these two ratios match?” test.
