The number i
There is a number i such that i2=−1. It is neither positive nor negative.
The set C of complex numbers contains all z=a+ib with a,b∈R.
- a=Re(z): real part
- b=Im(z): imaginary part (a real number, not ib!)
Sum: (a+ib)+(c+id)=(a+c)+i(b+d).
Product: (a+ib)(c+id)=(ac−bd)+i(ad+bc).
Conjugate: z=a−ib. Then zz=a2+b2=∣z∣2.
Inverse: z1=∣z∣2z.
Modulus and argument
∣z∣=a2+b2: distance from z to the origin in the complex plane.
arg(z)=θ such that z=∣z∣(cosθ+isinθ). The angle between the real axis and [Oz].
Properties:
- ∣z1z2∣=∣z1∣⋅∣z2∣
- arg(z1z2)=arg(z1)+arg(z2)(mod2π)
- ∣zn∣=∣z∣n, arg(zn)=narg(z)
Trigonometric: z=∣z∣(cosθ+isinθ)
Exponential: z=∣z∣eiθ (with eiθ=cosθ+isinθ, Euler’s formula)
(cosθ+isinθ)n=cos(nθ)+isin(nθ)
In exponential form: (eiθ)n=einθ.
Solving z2=w in C
If w=reiα: the 2 square roots are ±reiα/2.
Real-coefficient quadratic
az2+bz+c=0 with Δ=b2−4ac.
- Δ≥0: two real solutions (usual formulas).
- Δ<0: two complex conjugate solutions z=2a−b±i−Δ.
Geometric representation
z=a+ib ↔ point M(a,b) in the complex plane.
- ∣z∣ = OM
- arg(z) = angle (u,OM)
- ∣z2−z1∣ = distance between M1 and M2
- arg(z2−z1) = angle of vector M1M2
n-th roots of unity
The n solutions of zn=1 are zk=e2ikπ/n for k=0,1,…,n−1.
Common mistakes
- Writing −1 instead of i (bad notation).
- Confusing imaginary part with ib (Im(2+3i)=3, not 3i).
- Forgetting the (mod2π) in arguments.
- Adding moduli of a sum (∣z1+z2∣=∣z1∣+∣z2∣ in general).
