The big picture

The natural logarithm ln⁑\ln is the inverse of the exponential. It turns a product into a sum, making it essential for every model that multiplies (growth, decibels, pH…).

12345678-3-2-1123(1, 0)(e, 1)f(x) = ln(x)

Definition

ln⁑:R+βˆ—β†’R\ln : \mathbb{R}_+^* \to \mathbb{R}

The inverse of exp⁑\exp:

  • ln⁑(ex)=x\ln(e^x) = x for every real xx
  • eln⁑x=xe^{\ln x} = x for every x>0x > 0

Key values: ln⁑(1)=0\ln(1) = 0 and ln⁑(e)=1\ln(e) = 1.

The 5 algebraic properties

These mirror the exponential rules. Memorize them.

PropertyFormula
Productln⁑(ab)=ln⁑a+ln⁑b\ln(ab) = \ln a + \ln b
Quotientln⁑(ab)=ln⁑aβˆ’ln⁑b\ln\left(\dfrac{a}{b}\right) = \ln a - \ln b
Reciprocalln⁑(1a)=βˆ’ln⁑a\ln\left(\dfrac{1}{a}\right) = -\ln a
Powerln⁑(an)=nln⁑a\ln(a^n) = n \ln a
Rootln⁑(a)=12ln⁑a\ln(\sqrt{a}) = \dfrac{1}{2} \ln a

⚠️ Only valid for a,b>0a, b > 0.

Derivative

Fundamental: (ln⁑x)β€²=1xforΒ x>0(\ln x)' = \dfrac{1}{x} \quad \text{for } x > 0

General (chain): (ln⁑u(x))β€²=uβ€²(x)u(x)(\ln u(x))' = \dfrac{u'(x)}{u(x)}

Examples:

  • (ln⁑(2x+1))β€²=22x+1(\ln(2x + 1))' = \dfrac{2}{2x + 1}
  • (ln⁑(x2+1))β€²=2xx2+1(\ln(x^2 + 1))' = \dfrac{2x}{x^2 + 1}

Monotonicity

On R+βˆ—\mathbb{R}_+^*, 1/x>01/x > 0, so ln⁑\ln is strictly increasing.

Bijective from R+βˆ—\mathbb{R}_+^* to R\mathbb{R}.

Limits

LimitValue
lim⁑xβ†’+∞ln⁑x\lim_{x \to +\infty} \ln x+∞+\infty
lim⁑xβ†’0+ln⁑x\lim_{x \to 0^+} \ln xβˆ’βˆž-\infty
lim⁑xβ†’+∞ln⁑xx\lim_{x \to +\infty} \dfrac{\ln x}{x}00 (comparative growth)
lim⁑xβ†’+∞ln⁑xxn\lim_{x \to +\infty} \dfrac{\ln x}{x^n}00 for n>0n > 0
lim⁑xβ†’0+xln⁑x\lim_{x \to 0^+} x \ln x00
lim⁑xβ†’0ln⁑(1+x)x\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\ln(1 + x)}{x}11

Comparative growth: logarithm loses to every power (opposite of exponential).

Equations and inequalities

ln⁑\ln is strictly increasing:

  • ln⁑a=ln⁑bβ€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€Ša=b\ln a = \ln b \iff a = b (for a,b>0a, b > 0)
  • ln⁑a<ln⁑bβ€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€Ša<b\ln a < \ln b \iff a < b

Example 1

Solve ln⁑(2xβˆ’3)=ln⁑(x+1)\ln(2x - 3) = \ln(x + 1).

Domain: x>3/2x > 3/2. Bijection: 2xβˆ’3=x+1β€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€Šx=42x - 3 = x + 1 \iff x = 4. βœ“

Example 2

Solve ln⁑(x2βˆ’1)≀0\ln(x^2 - 1) \leq 0.

ln⁑y≀0β€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€Šy≀1\ln y \leq 0 \iff y \leq 1. So x2βˆ’1≀1x^2 - 1 \leq 1, x2≀2x^2 \leq 2.

Domain: x2βˆ’1>0β‡’x<βˆ’1x^2 - 1 > 0 \Rightarrow x < -1 or x>1x > 1.

Union: x∈[βˆ’2,βˆ’1[βˆͺ]1,2]x \in [-\sqrt{2}, -1[ \cup ]1, \sqrt{2}].

Example 3

Solve ln⁑x=3\ln x = 3.

x=e3β‰ˆ20.09x = e^3 \approx 20.09.

Full study: f(x)=xln⁑xβˆ’xf(x) = x \ln x - x

Domain: x>0x > 0.

Derivative: fβ€²(x)=ln⁑x+1βˆ’1=ln⁑xf'(x) = \ln x + 1 - 1 = \ln x.

Sign: ln⁑x>0β€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€Šx>1\ln x > 0 \iff x > 1.

  • fβ€²<0f' < 0 on (0,1)(0, 1)
  • fβ€²>0f' > 0 on (1,+∞)(1, +\infty)

Minimum at x=1x = 1: f(1)=βˆ’1f(1) = -1.

Limits:

  • xβ†’0+x \to 0^+: f(x)β†’0f(x) \to 0.
  • xβ†’+∞x \to +\infty: f(x)β†’+∞f(x) \to +\infty.
12345-112minf(x) = xΒ·ln(x) βˆ’ x

Real applications

  • pH: pH=βˆ’log⁑[H+]\text{pH} = -\log[H^+]
  • Decibels: L=10log⁑(I/I0)L = 10 \log(I/I_0)
  • Earthquake magnitude: log scale
  • Doubling time: T=ln⁑2kT = \dfrac{\ln 2}{k}

Common mistakes

  1. ln⁑(a+b)β‰ ln⁑a+ln⁑b\ln(a + b) \neq \ln a + \ln b. The rule is for products: ln⁑(ab)\ln(ab).
  2. ln⁑\ln of a negative number doesn’t exist (in reals).
  3. Forgetting domain conditions: always check arguments are positive.
  4. ln⁑\ln vs log⁑\log: in high school log⁑\log usually means ln⁑\ln unless stated.

Solved exercises

Exercise 1

Simplify ln⁑12βˆ’ln⁑3+ln⁑4\ln 12 - \ln 3 + \ln 4.

Show solution

=ln⁑(12/3)+ln⁑4=ln⁑4+ln⁑4=2ln⁑4=ln⁑16= \ln(12/3) + \ln 4 = \ln 4 + \ln 4 = 2\ln 4 = \ln 16.

Exercise 2

Solve ln⁑(x+2)+ln⁑(xβˆ’1)=ln⁑4\ln(x + 2) + \ln(x - 1) = \ln 4.

Show solution

Domain: x>1x > 1. ln⁑((x+2)(xβˆ’1))=ln⁑4\ln((x+2)(x-1)) = \ln 4, so (x+2)(xβˆ’1)=4(x+2)(x-1) = 4. x2+xβˆ’6=0x^2 + x - 6 = 0, roots 22 or βˆ’3-3. Only 22 valid.

Exercise 3

Derivative of f(x)=xln⁑xf(x) = x \ln x.

Show solution

fβ€²(x)=ln⁑x+xβ‹…1x=ln⁑x+1f'(x) = \ln x + x \cdot \dfrac{1}{x} = \ln x + 1.
