Trigonometry: complete lesson (unit circle, sin, cos, tan, formulas)

Unit circle, key values, addition formulas, equations. The full high-school lesson.

Prerequisites :

  • Pythagorean theorem
  • SOH-CAH-TOA

The unit circle

The unit circle is the circle centered at OO with radius 11 in an orthonormal frame.

To a real number xx, we associate a point MM on the circle such that the arc length from (1,0)(1, 0) equals xx (counter-clockwise).

  • cos⁑(x)\cos(x) = x-coordinate of MM
  • sin⁑(x)\sin(x) = y-coordinate of MM
  • tan⁑(x)=sin⁑(x)cos⁑(x)\tan(x) = \dfrac{\sin(x)}{\cos(x)} (defined when cos⁑(x)β‰ 0\cos(x) \neq 0)

Key values to memorize

xx00Ο€/6\pi/6Ο€/4\pi/4Ο€/3\pi/3Ο€/2\pi/2
cos⁑(x)\cos(x)113/2\sqrt{3}/22/2\sqrt{2}/21/21/200
sin⁑(x)\sin(x)001/21/22/2\sqrt{2}/23/2\sqrt{3}/211
tan⁑(x)\tan(x)003/3\sqrt{3}/3113\sqrt{3}∞

Memory hint: cos⁑\cos decreases, sin⁑\sin increases on [0,Ο€/2][0, \pi/2].

Fundamental properties

Periodicity

cos⁑(x+2Ο€)=cos⁑(x)sin⁑(x+2Ο€)=sin⁑(x)\cos(x + 2\pi) = \cos(x) \qquad \sin(x + 2\pi) = \sin(x)

tan⁑\tan has period Ο€\pi: tan⁑(x+Ο€)=tan⁑(x)\tan(x + \pi) = \tan(x).

Parity

cos⁑(βˆ’x)=cos⁑(x)(even)\cos(-x) = \cos(x) \quad \text{(even)} sin⁑(βˆ’x)=βˆ’sin⁑(x)(odd)\sin(-x) = -\sin(x) \quad \text{(odd)}

Pythagorean identity

cos⁑2(x)+sin⁑2(x)=1\cos^2(x) + \sin^2(x) = 1

Associated angles

Addition formulas

cos⁑(a+b)=cos⁑(a)cos⁑(b)βˆ’sin⁑(a)sin⁑(b)\cos(a + b) = \cos(a)\cos(b) - \sin(a)\sin(b) cos⁑(aβˆ’b)=cos⁑(a)cos⁑(b)+sin⁑(a)sin⁑(b)\cos(a - b) = \cos(a)\cos(b) + \sin(a)\sin(b) sin⁑(a+b)=sin⁑(a)cos⁑(b)+cos⁑(a)sin⁑(b)\sin(a + b) = \sin(a)\cos(b) + \cos(a)\sin(b) sin⁑(aβˆ’b)=sin⁑(a)cos⁑(b)βˆ’cos⁑(a)sin⁑(b)\sin(a - b) = \sin(a)\cos(b) - \cos(a)\sin(b)

Double-angle formulas

cos⁑(2a)=cos⁑2(a)βˆ’sin⁑2(a)=2cos⁑2(a)βˆ’1=1βˆ’2sin⁑2(a)\cos(2a) = \cos^2(a) - \sin^2(a) = 2\cos^2(a) - 1 = 1 - 2\sin^2(a) sin⁑(2a)=2sin⁑(a)cos⁑(a)\sin(2a) = 2\sin(a)\cos(a)

Solving cos⁑(x)=a\cos(x) = a and sin⁑(x)=a\sin(x) = a

cos⁑(x)=a\cos(x) = a: solutions x=Β±Ξ±+2kΟ€x = \pm \alpha + 2k\pi where Ξ±=arccos⁑(a)\alpha = \arccos(a).

sin⁑(x)=a\sin(x) = a: solutions x=Ξ±+2kΟ€x = \alpha + 2k\pi or x=Ο€βˆ’Ξ±+2kΟ€x = \pi - \alpha + 2k\pi.

Functions x↦cos⁑(x)x \mapsto \cos(x) and x↦sin⁑(x)x \mapsto \sin(x)

  • Defined on R\mathbb{R}
  • Periodic with period 2Ο€2\pi
  • Values in [βˆ’1,1][-1, 1]
  • cos⁑\cos is even, sin⁑\sin is odd

Common mistakes

  1. Forgetting +2kΟ€+2k\pi in equation solutions.
  2. Confusing cos⁑(a+b)\cos(a+b) with cos⁑(a)+cos⁑(b)\cos(a) + \cos(b): wrong!
  3. Forgetting cos⁑2+sin⁑2=1\cos^2 + \sin^2 = 1 to eliminate a variable.
  4. Sign errors in cos⁑(Ο€βˆ’x)\cos(\pi - x) vs cos⁑(Ο€+x)\cos(\pi + x).
