Barycenter: weighted average of positions
G = (αA + βB) / (α+β): center of balance between 2 weighted points. Generalization of midpoint.
Barycenter of 2 weighted points
The barycenter of and (with ) is the point such that:
Coordinate formula
If and :
The weighted average of coordinates.
Special case: midpoint
If (equal weights), is the midpoint of :
Barycenter of 3 points: centroid
Centroid of (equal weights) = center of gravity of the triangle:
At the intersection of the medians, one-third from the base.
Generalization to points
Barycenter of (with ):
(coordinate-wise weighted average).
Property: associativity
You can group points into subgroups and take the barycenter of partial barycenters.
Example: barycenter of (weights 1, 1, 2) = barycenter of [midpoint of with weight 2] and [ with weight 2].
Application 1: center of mass
In physics, the barycenter is the center of mass. Weight = mass of each point.
Application 2: dividing a segment
Point dividing in ratio : is the barycenter of and (swapped weights).
Common mistakes
- Dividing by instead of .
- Writing zero weights sum (undefined if ).
- Swapping weights in the formula.
- Confusing centroid and barycenter (centroid = all weights equal).
