Complete function study: the 6-step method

Domain, derivative, monotonicity, extrema, limits, curve. The exam ritual so you don't forget anything.

The 6-step ritual

Step 1 β€” Domain

Forbidden values:

  • Denominator = 0
  • Negative or 0 argument for \sqrt{}, ln⁑\ln
  • tan⁑\tan at Ο€/2+kΟ€\pi/2 + k\pi

Step 2 β€” Limits at boundaries

Every boundary of the domain, including ±∞\pm\infty.

Step 3 β€” Derivative

Compute fβ€²(x)f'(x).

Step 4 β€” Sign of derivative

  • fβ€²>0f' > 0 β‡’ increasing
  • fβ€²<0f' < 0 β‡’ decreasing
  • fβ€²=0f' = 0 isolated β‡’ extremum

Step 5 β€” Monotonicity table

Three rows: xx, fβ€²(x)f'(x), f(x)f(x), with limits at boundaries and extrema values.

Step 6 β€” Curve

Draw:

  • Notable points (extrema, intersections)
  • Vertical asymptotes
  • Horizontal asymptotes

Quick example: f(x)=x3βˆ’3xf(x) = x^3 - 3x

Domain: R\mathbb{R}.

Limits: ±∞\pm\infty.

Derivative: fβ€²(x)=3(xβˆ’1)(x+1)f'(x) = 3(x-1)(x+1).

Sign:

  • fβ€²>0f' > 0 on (βˆ’βˆž,βˆ’1)βˆͺ(1,+∞)(-\infty, -1) \cup (1, +\infty)
  • fβ€²<0f' < 0 on (βˆ’1,1)(-1, 1)

Table:

  • Increasing on (βˆ’βˆž,βˆ’1](-\infty, -1]
  • Decreasing on [βˆ’1,1][-1, 1]
  • Increasing on [1,+∞)[1, +\infty)
  • Local max at βˆ’1-1: f(βˆ’1)=2f(-1) = 2
  • Local min at 11: f(1)=βˆ’2f(1) = -2

Exam tips

  • Always state the domain first.
  • Justify each sign change of fβ€²f'.
  • Name asymptotes: β€œvertical asymptote x=ax = a”.

Common mistakes

  1. Forgetting the domain.
  2. Confusing local and global extrema.
  3. Wrong ±∞\pm\infty placement.
