Rotation in the plane: center, angle, sense, image of a point

3 things define a rotation: center O, angle ΞΈ, sense (clockwise or counter-clockwise). Method to construct the image of a point.

The 3 elements

A rotation needs:

  1. Center OO (fixed point)
  2. Angle ΞΈ\theta (degrees or radians)
  3. Sense:
    • Counter-clockwise (positive, trigonometric)
    • Clockwise (negative)

Image of point M

The image Mβ€²M' satisfies:

  • OM=OMβ€²OM = OM' (same distance from center)
  • MOMβ€²^=ΞΈ\widehat{MOM'} = \theta (angle from MM to Mβ€²M', correct sense)

Step-by-step construction

  1. Draw the circle centered at OO with radius OMOM.
  2. Draw the ray [OM)[OM).
  3. Draw another ray from OO making angle ΞΈ\theta with [OM)[OM) (correct sense).
  4. The intersection with the circle is Mβ€²M'.

Properties

A rotation preserves:

  • Lengths
  • Angles
  • Areas
  • Orientation (unlike reflection)

Special cases

  • 0Β° or 360Β°: identity.
  • 180Β°: central symmetry with center OO.
  • 90Β°: squares, 4-leaf shapes.

Common mistakes

  1. Forgetting sense (CW vs CCW).
  2. Confusing rotation and translation: rotation has fixed center; translation slides everything.
  3. Thinking the center moves: it’s always invariant.
