Intersection: A∩B
A∩B={x∣x∈A AND x∈B}
Elements in A AND in B at the same time.
Example: A={1,2,3,4}, B={3,4,5,6} ⇒ A∩B={3,4}.
Union: A∪B
A∪B={x∣x∈A OR x∈B}
Elements in A OR in B (or both).
Example: A∪B={1,2,3,4,5,6}.
On intervals
[1,5]∩[3,7]=[3,5]
[1,5]∪[3,7]=[1,7]
Special cases
- A∩A=A, A∪A=A.
- A∩∅=∅, A∪∅=A.
- If A⊂B: A∩B=A, A∪B=B.
Complement
A={x∣x∈/A}
In a reference set E, A=E∖A.
De Morgan’s laws
A∩B=A∪B
A∪B=A∩B
“Negation swaps AND and OR”.
Venn diagram
Two overlapping circles:
- Intersection = common zone (middle).
- Union = whole picture.
Common mistakes
- Confusing ∩ (and) with ∪ (or).
- Writing A∩B=A∪B carelessly.
- Using ∈ (element) and ⊂ (subset) interchangeably.
