Squeeze theorem: sandwich to conclude
If v_n โค u_n โค w_n and v_n, w_n both tend to โ, so does u_n. A classic for tricky limits.
Statement
Squeeze theorem: if for all from some rank on:
and if , then:
Idea: is โtrappedโ between two sequences converging to the same limit. So it must go there too.
Function version
If near (or ), and , then .
Application: sequences with cos/sin
. What limit?
, so:
and , so .
Corollary: limit
If and , then .
Same: if and , then .
Example: . And , so .
Method
- Bracket between two simpler expressions.
- Compute limits of the brackets.
- Check theyโre equal (else fails).
- Conclude by the theorem.
Traps
โ ๏ธ If the two limits arenโt equal, we can not conclude. Find a tighter bracket.
โ ๏ธ The bracket must hold for all (from some rank).
Common mistakes
- Bracket too loose (limits of and differ).
- Reversed inequalities.
- Forgetting to prove the bracket (not just assert).
