The principle
On [0,2π], each equation has at most 2 solutions. On R, add +2kπ (period 2π).
cos(x)=a
Solutions: x=±α+2kπ where α=arccos(a).
Example: cos(x)=21 ⇒ x=±3π+2kπ.
On the circle: symmetry with respect to the horizontal axis.
sin(x)=a
Solutions: x=α+2kπ or x=π−α+2kπ where α=arcsin(a).
Example: sin(x)=21 ⇒ x=6π+2kπ or x=65π+2kπ.
On the circle: symmetry with respect to the vertical axis.
tan(x)=a
Solutions: x=arctan(a)+kπ (period π, not 2π).
Example: tan(x)=1 ⇒ x=4π+kπ.
Common special cases
| a | cos(x)=a | sin(x)=a |
|---|
| 0 | π/2+kπ | kπ |
| 1/2 | ±π/3+2kπ | π/6,5π/6+2kπ |
| 2/2 | ±π/4+2kπ | π/4,3π/4+2kπ |
| 3/2 | ±π/6+2kπ | π/3,2π/3+2kπ |
| 1 | 2kπ | π/2+2kπ |
Common mistakes
- Forgetting 2kπ (must give all solutions on R).
- Confusing cos and sin: cos ⇒ ±α, sin ⇒ α and π−α.
- Missing the second case for sin.
- Writing +2kπ for tan instead of +kπ.
