The idea
The domain Dfβ is the set of x for which f(x) exists.
The forbidden-values checklist
For every expression, exclude:
| Expression | Forbidden |
|---|
| BAβ | B=0 |
| Aβ | A<0 |
| ln(A) | Aβ€0 |
| tan(x) | x=Ο/2+kΟ |
| AΞ± non-integer | Aβ€0 |
Method
- Identify each sensitive expression in f(x).
- Write the conditions.
- Solve the system of conditions.
- Write Dfβ as an intersection (or union of intervals).
Examples
f(x)=xβ31β β xξ =3. Dfβ=Rβ{3}.
f(x)=xβ5β β xβ5β₯0 β xβ₯5. Dfβ=[5,+β).
f(x)=ln(x+2) β x+2>0 β x>β2. Dfβ=(β2,+β).
f(x)=xβ4xββ β xβ₯0 AND xξ =4. Dfβ=[0,4)βͺ(4,+β).
Composition: careful
f(x)=ln(x2β4) β x2β4>0 β x<β2 or x>2. Dfβ=(ββ,β2)βͺ(2,+β).
Solve the inequality on the argument, donβt just state it!
Note
- A polynomial is defined on R (no restriction).
- Aβ requires Aβ₯0 (non-strict: 0β=0 exists).
- ln(A) requires A>0 (strict: ln(0) doesnβt exist).
Common mistakes
- Confusing β₯ (root) and > (log).
- Forgetting to solve the inequality (writing the condition isnβt enough).
- Thinking x1β is defined at 0 (forbidden).
- Writing Dfβ=R without checking.
