Sum and product of roots: S = โˆ’b/a, P = c/a

For axยฒ+bx+c=0, the roots satisfy xโ‚+xโ‚‚ = โˆ’b/a and xโ‚ยทxโ‚‚ = c/a. Handy without the discriminant.

Vietaโ€™s formulas

For a quadratic ax2+bx+c=0a x^2 + b x + c = 0 with two roots x1x_1 and x2x_2:

S=x1+x2=โˆ’baS = x_1 + x_2 = -\dfrac{b}{a}

P=x1ร—x2=caP = x_1 \times x_2 = \dfrac{c}{a}

Why is it useful?

  • Quickly verify a factorization.
  • Find the second root if you know one.
  • Build a polynomial with given roots.
  • Study the sign of the roots without computing them.

Find the 2nd root

Example: x2โˆ’7x+12=0x^2 - 7x + 12 = 0. We see x=3x = 3 is a root (since 9โˆ’21+12=09 - 21 + 12 = 0).

Sum: x1+x2=7x_1 + x_2 = 7, so x2=7โˆ’3=4x_2 = 7 - 3 = 4.

Product check: 3ร—4=123 \times 4 = 12. โœ“

Build a polynomial

Find a polynomial with roots 22 and โˆ’5-5.

S=2+(โˆ’5)=โˆ’3S = 2 + (-5) = -3, P=2ร—(โˆ’5)=โˆ’10P = 2 \times (-5) = -10.

P(x)=x2โˆ’Sx+P=x2+3xโˆ’10P(x) = x^2 - S x + P = x^2 + 3x - 10.

Sign of roots (without computation)

  • Product P>0P > 0: both roots have the same sign.
  • Product P<0P < 0: they have opposite signs.
  • Sum S>0S > 0 and P>0P > 0: two positive roots.
  • Sum S<0S < 0 and P>0P > 0: two negative roots.

Careful

These formulas only work when the quadratic has two roots (real or complex), i.e. ฮ”โ‰ 0\Delta \neq 0 or =0= 0 (double root: S=2x0S = 2x_0).

If ฮ”<0\Delta < 0 in R\mathbb{R}: formulas hold in C\mathbb{C} (roots are conjugate).

Common mistakes

  1. Forgetting the โˆ’- in S=โˆ’b/aS = -b/a.
  2. Writing S=โˆ’bS = -b and P=cP = c and forgetting the factor aa.
  3. Using formulas for a non-normalized quadratic without dividing by aa.
