Exp and log equations: e^x = k and ln(x) = k in 30 seconds

e^x = k โ‡’ x = ln(k). ln(x) = k โ‡’ x = e^k. Two inverse equations, two reflexes.

Exponential equation: ex=ke^x = k

  • If k>0k > 0: unique solution x=lnโก(k)x = \ln(k).
  • If kโ‰ค0k \leq 0: no solution (since ex>0e^x > 0 always).

Example: ex=5e^x = 5 โ‡’ x=lnโก(5)โ‰ˆ1.609x = \ln(5) \approx 1.609.

Logarithmic equation: lnโก(x)=k\ln(x) = k

Domain: x>0x > 0.

Always a unique solution: x=ekx = e^k.

Example: lnโก(x)=2\ln(x) = 2 โ‡’ x=e2โ‰ˆ7.389x = e^2 \approx 7.389.

More complex cases

eax+b=ke^{ax + b} = k with k>0k > 0: ax+b=lnโก(k)โ‡’x=lnโก(k)โˆ’baa x + b = \ln(k) \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{\ln(k) - b}{a}

lnโก(ax+b)=k\ln(a x + b) = k with ax+b>0a x + b > 0: ax+b=ekโ‡’x=ekโˆ’baa x + b = e^k \Rightarrow x = \dfrac{e^k - b}{a}

โš ๏ธ Then verify the condition ax+b>0a x + b > 0.

Inequalities

ex>ke^x > k (exp is strictly increasing):

  • If kโ‰ค0k \leq 0: S=RS = \mathbb{R}.
  • If k>0k > 0: x>lnโก(k)x > \ln(k).

lnโก(x)>k\ln(x) > k (ln is strictly increasing):

  • Always x>ekx > e^k (and x>0x > 0 automatic).

Solving ef(x)=eg(x)e^{f(x)} = e^{g(x)}

Since expโก\exp is injective: f(x)=g(x)f(x) = g(x).

Same for lnโก\ln: lnโก(f(x))=lnโก(g(x))โ€…โ€ŠโŸบโ€…โ€Šf(x)=g(x)\ln(f(x)) = \ln(g(x)) \iff f(x) = g(x) with f(x),g(x)>0f(x), g(x) > 0.

Common mistakes

  1. Solving ex=โˆ’3e^x = -3 without saying โ€œno solutionโ€.
  2. Forgetting the condition x>0x > 0 for lnโก\ln.
  3. Writing lnโก(a)+lnโก(b)=lnโก(a+b)\ln(a) + \ln(b) = \ln(a + b) (wrong: itโ€™s lnโก(ab)\ln(ab)).
  4. Writing ea+b=ea+ebe^{a+b} = e^a + e^b (wrong: itโ€™s eaโ‹…ebe^a \cdot e^b).
