Expanding (a+b)(c+d): the 'each with each' method that forgets nothing
FOIL / double distribution in 4 visual steps. The safest way to avoid missing terms.
The rule
Every term in the 1st parenthesis multiplies every term in the 2nd.
The βarrowsβ method (4 steps)
Draw 4 arrows, one per product (aka FOIL):
- a β c: First Γ First
- a β d: Outer (first Γ last)
- b β c: Inner (last Γ first)
- b β d: Last Γ Last
Then sum the 4 results.
Example 1:
Sum:
Example 2 (with signs):
Sum:
β οΈ Watch signs: , not .
Special cases: notable identities
If the two parentheses are identical or opposite, use directly:
Faster than the general method.
Simplify at the end
Always combine like terms: .
Common mistake
Forgetting one of the 4 products. Fix: physically draw the 4 arrows on your paper, donβt do it in your head.
Expand (2x + 1)(x β 3).
