Rules for computing with powers: the printable sheet

Multiply, divide, raise to a power… 5 rules that cover every case in middle and high school.

The 5 rules

Let a,b≠0a, b \neq 0 and m,nm, n integers.

RuleFormulaExample
Product of powers (same base)am×an=am+na^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}23×25=282^3 \times 2^5 = 2^8
Quotient of powers (same base)aman=am−n\dfrac{a^m}{a^n} = a^{m-n}3734=33\dfrac{3^7}{3^4} = 3^3
Power of a power(am)n=am×n(a^m)^n = a^{m \times n}(52)3=56(5^2)^3 = 5^6
Product of different bases(a×b)n=an×bn(a \times b)^n = a^n \times b^n(2×3)4=24×34(2 \times 3)^4 = 2^4 \times 3^4
Quotient of different bases(ab)n=anbn\left(\dfrac{a}{b}\right)^n = \dfrac{a^n}{b^n}(52)3=1258\left(\dfrac{5}{2}\right)^3 = \dfrac{125}{8}

Special cases

  • a0=1a^0 = 1 (for any a≠0a \neq 0)
  • a1=aa^1 = a
  • a−n=1ana^{-n} = \dfrac{1}{a^n} (negative exponent = reciprocal)

Traps

Trap 1 — Rules work on same base only. There’s no simple formula for 23×332^3 \times 3^3 or 23+252^3 + 2^5.

Trap 2 — −32-3^2 vs (−3)2(-3)^2:

  • (−3)2=9(-3)^2 = 9 (square of negative is positive)
  • −32=−9-3^2 = -9 (compute 32=93^2 = 9 first, then apply the −)

Examples

Simplify 57×5−253\dfrac{5^7 \times 5^{-2}}{5^3}:

  • Numerator: 57+(−2)=555^{7 + (-2)} = 5^5
  • Divided by 535^3: 52=255^2 = 25.

Simplify (23)4210\dfrac{(2^3)^4}{2^{10}}:

  • Numerator: 2122^{12}
  • Divided by 2102^{10}: 22=42^2 = 4.
