Linear equation: the 4-step method

Expand, gather x on one side and the rest on the other, divide. A reliable routine.

Goal

Isolate xx. Every linear equation reduces to ax=bax = b, whose solution is x=b/ax = b/a (if a≠0a \neq 0).

4-step method

  1. Expand if there are parentheses.
  2. Gather: xx-terms on the left, others on the right (flip sign when crossing the ==).
  3. Simplify on each side (collect like terms).
  4. Divide by the coefficient of xx.

Typical example

Solve 3(xβˆ’2)=5x+43(x - 2) = 5x + 4.

1. Expand: 3xβˆ’6=5x+43x - 6 = 5x + 4.

2. Gather: 3xβˆ’5x=4+63x - 5x = 4 + 6.

3. Simplify: βˆ’2x=10-2x = 10.

4. Divide: x=10βˆ’2=βˆ’5x = \dfrac{10}{-2} = -5.

Check: 3(βˆ’5βˆ’2)=βˆ’213(-5 - 2) = -21 and 5(βˆ’5)+4=βˆ’215(-5) + 4 = -21. βœ“

Special cases

No solution: 0x=c0 x = c with cβ‰ 0c \neq 0. Ex: 2x+3=2xβˆ’12x + 3 = 2x - 1 gives 0=βˆ’40 = -4, impossible.

Infinitely many solutions: 0x=00 x = 0. Ex: 2x+3=2x+32x + 3 = 2x + 3 gives 0=00 = 0, true for all xx.

Equation with fractions

Multiply everything by the common denominator before solving.

Example: x3+1=x+56\dfrac{x}{3} + 1 = \dfrac{x + 5}{6}.

Multiply by 66: 2x+6=x+52x + 6 = x + 5, then x=βˆ’1x = -1.

Common mistakes

  1. Forgetting to flip signs when crossing the ==.
  2. Partial expansion (not distributing to every term).
  3. Wrong division direction (x=a/bx = a/b vs x=b/ax = b/a).
  4. Not verifying by plugging back.
