Relative position of two lines: intersecting, parallel, coincident

Compare slopes and y-intercepts to classify 2 lines in 3 seconds.

Decision table

Let (d1):y=m1x+p1(d_1) : y = m_1 x + p_1 and (d2):y=m2x+p2(d_2) : y = m_2 x + p_2.

CoefficientsPosition
m1β‰ m2m_1 \neq m_2Intersecting (1 common point)
m1=m2m_1 = m_2 and p1β‰ p2p_1 \neq p_2Strictly parallel (0 common points)
m1=m2m_1 = m_2 and p1=p2p_1 = p_2Coincident (infinitely many points)

3-step method

  1. Put both equations in the form y=mx+py = mx + p.
  2. Compare slopes m1m_1 and m2m_2.
  3. If equal, compare y-intercepts.

Example

(d1):y=2x+3(d_1) : y = 2x + 3 and (d2):4xβˆ’2y+6=0(d_2) : 4x - 2y + 6 = 0.

Isolate yy in (d2)(d_2): y=2x+3y = 2x + 3.

m1=m2=2m_1 = m_2 = 2 and p1=p2=3p_1 = p_2 = 3 β‡’ coincident.

Intersection point (intersecting)

Solve the system: {y=m1x+p1y=m2x+p2\begin{cases} y = m_1 x + p_1 \\ y = m_2 x + p_2 \end{cases}

By equality: m1x+p1=m2x+p2m_1 x + p_1 = m_2 x + p_2 β‡’ x=p2βˆ’p1m1βˆ’m2x = \dfrac{p_2 - p_1}{m_1 - m_2}.

Vertical line case

x=ax = a has no slope (infinite slope).

  • x=ax = a and x=bx = b: parallel if aβ‰ ba \neq b, coincident if a=ba = b.
  • x=ax = a and y=mx+py = mx + p: always intersecting at (a,ma+p)(a, ma + p).

Common mistakes

  1. Comparing pp before mm (order matters).
  2. Forgetting to put in the form y=mx+py = mx + p.
  3. Confusing parallel and coincident: parallel = 0 points, coincident = all points.
