Nth term of a sequence: the two formulas you must never forget

Arithmetic or geometric sequence: find the n-th term in 5 seconds with the right formula and zero index mistakes.

The two formulas

Arithmetic sequence (you always add the common difference dd): un=u0+nβ‹…du_n = u_0 + n \cdot d or if starting from u1u_1: un=u1+(nβˆ’1)β‹…du_n = u_1 + (n-1) \cdot d

Geometric sequence (you always multiply by the common ratio qq): un=u0β‹…qnu_n = u_0 \cdot q^n or if starting from u1u_1: un=u1β‹…qnβˆ’1u_n = u_1 \cdot q^{n-1}

Anti-off-by-one trick

The classic trap: is it nn or nβˆ’1n-1 in the exponent?

Simple rule: count the number of β€œsteps” between the starting index and the target index.

  • From u0u_0 to unu_n: there are nn steps β†’ coefficient nn.
  • From u1u_1 to unu_n: there are nβˆ’1n-1 steps β†’ coefficient nβˆ’1n-1.

Example 1

Arithmetic sequence with u0=3u_0 = 3 and d=5d = 5. What is u10u_{10}?

u10=3+10Γ—5=53u_{10} = 3 + 10 \times 5 = 53.

Example 2

Geometric sequence with u1=2u_1 = 2 and q=3q = 3. What is u5u_5?

From u1u_1 to u5u_5: 4 steps. u5=2Γ—34=162u_5 = 2 \times 3^{4} = 162.

?Γ€ toi de jouer

Arithmetic sequence u_0 = 7, d = βˆ’2. What is u_{20}?
