Signed numbers: the sign rule in 5 lines
Same sign = positive, different signs = negative. One rule for multiplication and division.
Addition and subtraction
Same sign: add the absolute values, keep the common sign.
Different signs: subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger, keep the sign of the larger.
- (7 > 3, keep +)
- (7 > 3, keep β)
Subtracting = adding the opposite:
Multiplication and division: the sign rule
- Same sign β positive
- Different signs β negative
Examples:
Count the minuses (product of several)
For a product of several numbers:
- Even number of βββ β result positive
- Odd number of βββ β result negative
Example: (3 minus signs, odd).
Careful: power of a negative
(parentheses, whole thing is squared)
(no parentheses, only 2 is squared, β stays)
β οΈ Important difference!
Common mistakes
- instead of (double negation).
- Adding as if all positive.
- (wrong, itβs ).
- Forgetting the even/odd rule in a product of many factors.
