Scientific notation: a × 10^n with 1 ≤ |a| < 10
A number between 1 and 10, times a power of 10. Handle huge and tiny numbers with ease.
The rule
A number is in scientific notation if written as:
with:
- (one nonzero digit before the decimal)
- an integer
How to convert to scientific notation
Large number: move the decimal to the left until 1 digit remains before it.
(decimal moved 4 places).
Small number: move the decimal to the right, becomes negative.
(decimal moved 4 places right).
Order of magnitude
Once written , the power gives the order of magnitude.
- ⇒ order (tens of thousands).
- ⇒ order (ten-thousandths).
Multiplication in scientific notation
Then adjust to stay in scientific notation if .
Example: .
Division
Common mistakes
- Leaving or (not in scientific form).
