The 3 fundamental rules
| Operation | Rule |
|---|
| Product (same base) | an×am=an+m |
| Quotient (same base) | aman=an−m |
| Power of a power | (an)m=an×m |
⚠️ These rules only apply when bases are identical.
Key special cases
- a0=1 (for any a=0)
- a1=a
- a−n=an1
- a1/2=a (high school)
Rules for different bases
(a×b)n=an×bn
(ba)n=bnan
⚠️ There is no simple rule for an+am or (a+b)n.
Typical examples
23×25=23+5=28=256.
104107=107−4=103=1000.
(32)4=32×4=38=6561.
5−2=521=251=0.04.
Trick: quotient with negative exponents
a−5a−3=a−3−(−5)=a−3+5=a2.
Common mistakes
- an+am=an+m (FALSE, that’s for the product).
- an×bn=(ab)2n (false, it’s (ab)n).
- (a+b)2=a2+b2 (false: a2+2ab+b2).
- Forgetting that a0=1.
