Product or quotient inequality: the sign chart is enough

Factor, sign chart for each factor, product of signs. One method that cracks them all.

The idea

To solve A(x)Γ—B(x)>0A(x) \times B(x) > 0 (or <0< 0, β‰₯0\geq 0, ≀0\leq 0):

  1. Factor if needed.
  2. Sign chart with values zeroing each factor.
  3. Product of signs on the last row.
  4. Read the intervals that work.

Simple example

Solve (xβˆ’1)(x+3)>0(x - 1)(x + 3) > 0.

Roots: x=1x = 1 and x=βˆ’3x = -3.

xxβˆ’βˆž-\inftyβˆ’3-311+∞+\infty
xβˆ’1x - 1βˆ’βˆ’00+
x+3x + 3βˆ’00++
Product+00βˆ’00

S=(βˆ’βˆž,βˆ’3)βˆͺ(1,+∞)S = (-\infty, -3) \cup (1, +\infty).

Quotient: mind the forbidden values

For A(x)B(x)\dfrac{A(x)}{B(x)}, we need B(x)β‰ 0B(x) \neq 0.

Same chart, but exclude the values zeroing the denominator (double bar).

Example: solve xβˆ’2x+1≀0\dfrac{x - 2}{x + 1} \leq 0.

Roots: x=2x = 2 (zeroes numerator), x=βˆ’1x = -1 (forbidden).

xxβˆ’βˆž-\inftyβˆ’1-122+∞+\infty
xβˆ’2x - 2βˆ’βˆ’00+
x+1x + 1βˆ’00 β€–++
Quotient+β€–βˆ’00

S=(βˆ’1,2]S = (-1, 2] (careful: βˆ’1-1 excluded, 22 included).

Watch squared factors

(xβˆ’3)2(x - 3)^2 is always β‰₯0\geq 0, zero only at 33. It never flips the overall sign.

Common mistakes

  1. Not excluding forbidden values in a quotient.
  2. Forgetting to include roots for large inequalities.
  3. Multiplying an inequality by (x+1)(x + 1) without knowing its sign (often flips direction!).
