Linear function y = ax + b: all you need to know

a = slope, b = y-intercept. Two numbers, one line, a thousand problems solved.

The form

f(x)=ax+bf(x) = ax + b

  • aa = slope (steepness)
  • bb = y-intercept (value of f(0)f(0))

Its graph is a line.

Special cases

  • a=0a = 0: f(x)=bf(x) = b (constant, horizontal line)
  • b=0b = 0: f(x)=axf(x) = ax (proportional, line through origin)

Reading the slope

  • a>0a > 0: increasing (line goes up)
  • a<0a < 0: decreasing (line goes down)
  • Large ∣a∣|a|: steep
  • Small ∣a∣|a|: gentle

Compute aa from two points

If A(xA,yA)A(x_A, y_A) and B(xB,yB)B(x_B, y_B) are on the line:

a=yBβˆ’yAxBβˆ’xAa = \dfrac{y_B - y_A}{x_B - x_A}

β€œRise over run.”

Compute bb

b=f(0)b = f(0). Or from aa and a point (x0,y0)(x_0, y_0): b=y0βˆ’ax0b = y_0 - a x_0

Example

Line through A(1,3)A(1, 3) and B(4,9)B(4, 9).

a=6/3=2a = 6/3 = 2, b=3βˆ’2=1b = 3 - 2 = 1. Equation: y=2x+1y = 2x + 1.

x-intercept

f(x)=0β€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€Šx=βˆ’b/af(x) = 0 \iff x = -b/a (if aβ‰ 0a \neq 0).

Common mistakes

  1. Mixing up aa and bb.
  2. Flipping numerator and denominator in slope: it’s Ξ”y/Ξ”x\Delta y / \Delta x.
  3. Sign error in y0βˆ’ax0y_0 - a x_0.
